Many children who have autism use toys in ways the toys were not made to be used or engage with them at all. Also, planning and structuring one’s own leisure times is difficult for children. Here is an example of a toy being used in an inappropriate way and later the same boy and same toy while he plays with it appropriately. He was taught this during his intensive ABA sessions and learned to play with this toy (along with others) within the first 6 months of the start of his ABA home program. There was a specific program for both fine motor and play skills that were targeted. Not only is he playing appropriately he is improving his fine motor and visual skills.
